EA is Developing a Black Panther Game

On Tuesday, July 10th EA officially announced an upcoming Black Panther game produced in collaboration with Marvel Entertainment. Development for this title is being led by a brand new Triple-A studio known as Cliffhanger Games, a subsidiary of EA. This upcoming title is stated to be an original third-person action-adventure game.

Though still early in development, the major feature of this title will be “its expansive and reactive world that empowers players to experience what it is like to take on the mantle of Wakanda’s protector.” In an official statement, the developers also added, “As we begin this remarkable journey we are excited to be working with Marvel Games to ensure that we craft every aspect of Wakanda, its technology, its heroes, and our own original story with the attention to detail and authenticity that the world of Black Panther deserves.”

The development team for this new title will be led by Kevin Stephens, previously of Monolith Productions. This was the studio behind the Shadow of Mordor series. In addition to Stephens, the new team also consists of many talented developers who worked on highly successful franchises such as God of War, Halo, and Call of Duty. No doubt this is EA’s attempt to compete with the hugely successful Spider-Man games developed by Insomniac who are also currently developing a Wolverine title. Nonetheless, I certainly see the potential here.

Black Panther is one of the most unique heroes on the Marvel roster. If the game leans heavily into the kingdom management aspect of his character as promised, it could certainly deliver a different enough experience to entice many hardcore fans and newcomers alike.
