The late 90s’ had a lot of platformers, and more specifically a lot of animated mascot platformers. From mascot characters that represented an entire console such as Mario, Sonic, or Spyro, to those that represented a specific company such as Gex or Mega-Man, it seemed like everyone had a cute character. One character and series that was successful yet never made as big of a splash was the Croc series.

Developed by Argonaut Software and published by Fox Interactive, the 3D platformer series centered on the eponymous anthropomorphic crocodile and his adventures against the evil Baron Dante. Croc: Legend of the Gobbos released in 1997 and Croc 2 was released in 1999. While they both were criticized for their difficulty and unwieldy camera, each still received plenty of positive reviews. A third game was planned but never came to fruition. Aside from a couple of early mobile games, the series has remained dormant for over 20 years. That might finally be subject to change though.

The news came in response to a piece by James Batchelor, the editor-in-chief for GamesIndustry.biz who wrote “The Making Of: Croc, 3D Platforming’s Unsung Hero” for Time Extension. The article got the attention of Argonaut Software founder Jez San. With a simple two-sentence tweet, he mentioned that a “Croc HD” has begun early development. It’s presumed this would be a remaster/remake of the first game, which focused on Croc saving the furry Gobbos creatures that raised him.

There certainly isn’t a lot to go off of from this small tweet though. We don’t know what any of the plans are for the project, or who’s properly working on it. Jez San has remained active in various industries, although not so much with video games. There’s no saying whether this project will even make it out of early development either. As someone who played both titles when I was young, I can’t deny that this news has me excited nonetheless. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before we hear more.

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
