Will FFVII: Rebirth Feature at the Summer Game Fest?

It has been quiet on the Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth front for some time now. Last year, Square Enix mentioned that Rebirth would release this winter, but after not hearing anything for a while a lot of people (myself included) were skeptical. However, after some Twitter posts over the weekend from the official FFVII account, those fears seem to be unfounded.

Over the past few days, Square Enix has been making posts with developer questions addressing various concerns from fans. At the time of writing, they’ve only made two posts, but it can be assumed that there will be more leading up to the Summer Game Fest on Thursday, June 8^th.

The first question in particular gave us a clearer idea of how things are progressing. When asked how development was going, the team responded that the development is going smoothly and that the team is working on nailing down a release date. This tells me that the winter release is still on track barring any major issues.

The second question sheds a little more light on how the world of FFVII: Rebirth will work. The question of “How will players journey through the world outside of Midgar in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?” was answered with “Players will be able to journey across the wide and multifaceted world with a high degree of freedom, experiencing a myriad of different stories along the way.”

To answer the question central to the title of this article, I’m almost positive we’ll see something about Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth during Summer Game Fest. Whether it gets its own dedicated showcase before the summer is up (that hasn’t been announced) or whether we see a new glimpse of it during Thursday’s live event, either way, we’re getting closer to a release date.

Aside from FFXVI, Rebirth is one of my most-anticipated games for 2023. Even if it somehow gets delayed to 2024, I can’t help but be excited to see where Rebirth takes us. Remake did a great job of retelling the first part of the story while differentiating itself and setting a new course. I have no doubt that from here, Rebirth’s story will take the beloved characters and story of Final Fantasy VII to new heights.
