Aspyr destroyed the last ounce of trust that it had in the Star Wars Community Friday evening when it posted on its Twitter page that the Restored Content DLC will not be released. Things have not been looking great for the Restored Content DLC ever since it missed its initial release window back in Q3 2022. When it did not release during that quarter, (July 1st through September 30th), Star Wars fans were quick to notice and asked Aspyr on Twitter what was going on.

However, the company decided to remain radio silent. The calls for a boycott of Aspyr grew louder and louder as the months rolled on. With this one announcement, Aspyr has now made this boycott even more vital as they are being torn to shreds on Twitter and YouTube.

EckhartsLadder, a prominent content creator in the Star Wars Community, mentioned in his video on this story that many people had bought KOTOR II on the Nintendo Switch solely because of the promise of the Restored Content DLC. Aspyr used this DLC heavily in their marketing of the game, as it is used in the trailer that was released on the Nintendo YouTube channel.

With this point, Aspyr should be willing to provide refunds to everyone who purchased the game. However, they are not doing that. Instead, the company is deciding to provide “a complimentary video game key to players that purchased Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords on Nintendo Switch before this announcement.” It is unclear at this moment if those who bought a physical edition of the game through Limited Run Games qualify for this, but many in the community still find this apology to be insufficient.

While I could talk more about how the community is taking this news, I think that they can speak for themselves with how they feel. Here are just a few of them:

There are now two questions that remain for this situation; one for Aspyr and the other for the upcoming Knights of the Old Republic Remake. For Aspyr, will they ever be able to recover from alienating the Star Wars Community? Considering that the Star Wars Community tends to have a very long memory, it is unlikely that Aspyr will ever win them back. Since the Star Wars ports have been a major source of income for Aspyr in the last few years, it appears that they will have to find another game series to replace Star Wars.

For the KOTOR Remake, will fans treat this remake with a sense of caution? With a Bloomberg report claiming that Saber Interactive is now in charge of the remake, I think that many fans will be just as scared of this game as Sony and Lucasfilm reportedly were. Even though Saber Interactive is a different studio, I think the close partnership that the company has with Aspyr will muddy things with the community. It will truly be dependent on Saber Interactive’s PR team to send a strong message to the Star Wars Community that they are nothing like their Aspyr counterpart.

While this was extremely sad news for many people, myself being one of them since KOTOR II was one of the games that defined my childhood and made me want to be a writer, there are other great Star Wars projects in the works to look forward to! Perhaps a merciful studio will one day pick up this Aspyr failure and turn it into a great success, but only time will tell if such a thing will happen. For now, the Star Wars Community’s boycott of Aspyr continues. One final note, it seems hilarious that one of the games that you can get a digital key for KOTOR II, the same game that they are apologizing for falsely advertising.

Did they give any reason why they would not be releasing it? Surely it can be that expensive to port that mod?

As of now they haven’t given a public reason as to why they wouldn’t be releasing it. There are speculations, but nothing concrete. I am in the process of tracking the lawsuit that has been filed against the company in regards to this DLC. When I have more information, I will make an article about it.
