Dead Island 2 is a sequel that many liked to jokingly say would never exist. The series has seen a memorable first game, an expansion, and many spin-offs, but the 2014-announced sequel continued to be quietly passed around through multiple development teams. It wouldn’t be incorrect to say that for many the beloved hype had been filtered down into a hesitant uncertainty that any finished product would go the way of Duke Nukem Forever.
Perhaps it’s the influx of wonderful zombie-like games we’ve had recently or maybe the series still has more recognition than people expected. Either way, Dead Island 2 has been a sequel nearly a decade in the making and quite a few people have jumped on to fight the undead in Hell-A. A recent press release from publisher Deep Silver and developer Dambuster Studios has revealed over one million copies of the game were sold over its first weekend.
Putting it even more into perspective are some additional in-game stats from the collective one million owners, whether they were playing alone or with their friends. Together they’ve totaled 11 million hours played and an understandable 28 million deaths. When it comes to the many zombies they’ve all fought: 45 million have been sliced in half, 756 million of their limbs have been maimed, and 1.1 billion zombies in general have been slain.
It’s a strong first three days for a game that so many were cautiously waiting for. If you’d like to read a first-hand take on what all of these people are experiencing, I wrote a review for the Xbox Series X|S version. While it does have some hiccups that prevent it from reaching grander heights, I had a lot of fun playing it and have certainly contributed to those weekend statistics.
