The modding scene in gaming has been going strong for several decades, enhancing base games and pushing them to their limits for the enjoyment of millions of players. When I first got a gaming laptop in 2013, I spent countless hours modding Left 4 Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2. I used the mods to experience the game in outlandish, ridiculous ways that pushed the limits of my imagination.

One of my recent favorite mods was Halo 3‘s Cursed Halo campaign by modder InfernoPlus. I could never get the Halo 1 Cursed Halo mod to work with my friend, but that has all changed thanks to InfernoPlus revamping it into “Cursed Halo Again” this weekend.

Getting Cursed Halo Again is as easy as subscribing to the mod in the Steam Workshop and having Halo 1‘s single-player and multiplayer downloads installed. You’ll also have to launch the game in Anti-Cheat disabled mode through the Steam client. In this mod, you can expect go-kart Warthogs, an A-Salt Rifle that shoots salt, and (best of all) a frag grenade that spits out a randomized effect. This could range from dropping a Minecraft chest to spawning five Captain Keyes and dropping a Garry’s Mod gun that lets you manipulate the battlefield to your pleasure.

The Cursed Halo Again mod isn’t without its jankiness that you’ll have to expect with a mod this size. The random grenades can spell certain doom for you if you’re not careful with their distance. If you’re playing co-op, you’ll need to temper your expectations. Players may have to wait for ages to respawn due to Halo 1‘s messy respawn limitations coupled with the chaos delaying it. Combine that with the checkpoints landing seemingly at random and you may lose minutes of progress in an instant. Regardless, the frenetic gameplay never lets up and any lost time is simply made up by Cursed Halo Again’s unexpected nature.

InfernoPlus has outdone themselves with Cursed Halo Again, delivering one of the most fun Halo experiences I’ve had since Halo 3 introduced the Forge mode. Six hours flew by on Saturday delving through this mod and my friend and I aren’t even halfway through. You can check out the mod here, and lose yourself in its insanity for free so long as you have at least Halo 1 purchased within Halo: Master Chief Collection.
