There’s a fun little movement happening in the JRPG world that returns players to the days of pixel art. 2.5D graphics began with Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler and have since been featured in games like Live a Live and Bravely Default 2. While these are upscaled, gorgeous approaches to bringing pixel art back to life, nothing quite matches the beauty of the golden age of JRPGs. We’ll soon get to relive that in some of the greatest games ever made on PS4 and Nintendo Switch when the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster arrives on the consoles.
The @FinalFantasy Pixel Remaster series launches on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch at 8am PDT / 4pm BST on April 19th!

Square Enix announced via Twitter that the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection is coming to PS4 and Switch on April 19th. The collection will bring Final Fantasy I – VI to the Nintendo and Sony consoles with a slew of updates. As the title mentions, pixel graphics are updated to look HD, but not in the 2.5D style. There are also tweaks to the original soundtracks, which would maybe cause alarm, if not for the involvement of original composer Nobuo Uematsu.
Other updates to gameplay will be familiar if you’ve played a classic Final Fantasy game via a port. Things like auto-battle, UI updates, and fast-forwarding will help speed up the process for those replaying the games. I will say, however, if you’re a first-timer taking on these games, it’s worth the ride to not rush through things. There’s a reason the series is so beloved. I’m eager to get my hands on these games because it’s been a long time since I’ve played many of these titles.
Pre-orders of the physical version of this collection were incredibly difficult to get, but the game’s April 19th release will include a digital version so that means you should have no problem grabbing all six games on release day. Let us know in the comments if you plan on playing these when they release and if it’ll be your first time exploring these early releases.
