MultiVersus, the F2P platform fighter that pits a wide range of characters from the expansive Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella, had a tremendous launch last year. The hype was already there from both the closed alpha and open beta previews and that persisted towards the release of the first season. Community opinion changed over time in response to specific issues. Although the second season would then be extended until March 31st to address the problem of players not having enough time to grind through the battle pass, many felt this wasn’t the correct solution and lamented the delay of a third season.

We’ve now found out the third season is going to take even longer to come out, if it’s still branded as such. A developer update went up yesterday explaining that the Open Beta period of MultiVersus would be closing on June 25th. This is being done to address player feedback and make various improvements. The second season will be extended once again until the closing date. Limited offline access to The Lab (training mode) and local matches will remain and all player content, free or paid, will carry over when it officially launches in early 2024.

The response has been mixed. Some fans are appreciative and see this as a big risky step for improving the title. Others are a lot less forgiving, especially if they’ve put money towards it through battle passes or founders’ packs. Although it was technically never announced that MultiVersus wasn’t in beta anymore, that reminder has also soured some due to the monetary mechanics that were in place and the lack of communication from developer Player First Games.

Targeting a launch date in 2024 also means that it will be offline for a minimum of six months. The changes they can make might just result in a far better experience, but there is some hesitation about whether they can capture that same magic and hype as they did when the open beta started. Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
