Sometimes I wonder why I cover the news. Last week I wrote about how I was excited by Terra Nil as we got closer to a release date. I’m still beyond excited after playing that demo back in 2021, the same demo that is still available on Steam at the time of writing. Just under a week after it was unveiled that Free Lives’ eco-warrior ’em up title would be coming this spring to mobile (via Netflix) and PC, Devolver Digital decided to give us an update to that with a March release date and a new trailer.

In this chill, meditative twist on the city-builder genre, you use advanced eco-tech to transform a barren, desolate wasteland into a thriving, vibrant ecosystem,” as the press release notes. It goes on to state: “Purify soil, clean oceans, plant trees, reintroduce wildlife—then recycle everything and move on, leaving no trace you were ever there.” I’ve said those things enough that I see no point in literally repeating myself, that non-violent and relaxing nature of turning the wilderness back to something beautiful is what I am most excited about.

The press release goes on to say, “Across 6-8 blissful hours, tackle a variety of replayable procedurally generated biomes – including volcanic glaciers, ruined cities and tropical islands – each with its own uniquely challenging climate, geology, [and] flora and fauna. Then when you’ve completed all four regions, challenge yourself further with unlockable alternate levels.” I am beyond excited to get my hands on the arid landscape and turn it lush, beautiful, and full of life.

When does Terra Nil release exactly? The peaceful city de-builder will launch on mobile (via Netflix) and Steam PC on the 28th of March. The press release also mentions that those who pre-order now will get the Deluxe Edition of Terra Nil. That edition includes the soundtrack and the undoubtedly gorgeous digital art book, all for the price of the standard edition. Not only that, but starting with the pre-order and continuing through the launch, Free Lives notes that it will donate a portion of the profits from Terra Nil‘s sales on Steam to the Endangered Wildlife Trust.
