We’re very familiar with post-apocalyptic stories at this point. For decades, the downfall of humanity or the United States has been a central tenant of countless sci-fi and fantasy movies, books, and TV shows. One of the most notable explorations of these tropes in gaming has been Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding. With a sequel on the way, it looks like we’ll be getting even more from the Stranding-verse with a movie coming soon from one of 2022’s breakout filmmakers.
First reported by Deadline, Hideo Kojima’s popular game Death Stranding will get a full feature-length film adaptation from the minds of this year’s breakout horror hit Barbarian. Executive Producer for Hammerstone Studios, Alex Lebovici will develop the game’s film adaptation with plenty of input and creative contributions from Kojima himself. This comes off the big announcement of the game’s sequel, Death Stranding 2, which is currently just a working title.
There’s no reason not to see Death Stranding as a great film project. The game is largely criticized for its uneventful gameplay that centers mostly around walking from point A to point B to deliver things. The moments that fans of the Kojima project always reference as instances of brilliance are in the world and story central to the game. With a star-studded cast, it’s interesting to predict if the actors from the game will return for the film version. Actors that appear in the game would certainly fit a movie bill.
The game’s use of talents like Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro, and Margaret Qualley really live up to how promising the game’s pre-release press seemed. If they’re able to get this cast back for the film, there’s no doubt that it will attract those who love the game. For non-gamers, it’ll be interesting if the story and lore central to Death Stranding will appeal to them. Even gamers thought some of those early trailers looked a little confusing and pretentious.
