Hellboy Video Game Coming Soon

Hellboy by Mike Mignola is easily one of the greatest dark fantasy sagas told through the comic book medium. Mignola’s wonderfully stylized world of demons and supernatural detectives offers a myriad of potential options for game adaptations. Throughout Hellboy’s adventures, he finds himself face to face with eldritch horrors, evil cults, and classic monsters like vampires, werewolves etc.

This newest announcement of a game series within the universe was easily my favorite thing to come out of this year’s Game Awards. Though the trailer was quite brief, publisher Good Shepherd Entertainment shared more information about the upcoming title that has me even more excited.

Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is stated to be a rougelite action-adventure title set in the Hellboy universe. Developers have worked closely with creator Mike Mignola and publisher Dark Horse. Mignola himself has written the game’s original story and designed much of the concept art for the project. This is certainly plain to see as the visuals showcased in the trailer are almost one-to-one replication of the comic pages.

The basic premise of the narrative finds Hellboy venturing into the Butterfly House. The house contains a portal into the Wyrd, which is described to be “a vast interdimensional web of wonderous and horrifying planes of existence beyond our world.” The brief glimpse of gameplay showcases the melee combat which focuses on third-person brawling, a style that is very appropriate for the character. Ranged combat is also stated to be a focus considering Hellboy often wields a variety of firearms.

The game also features the voice of Lance Reddick as the revolver-wielding hero himself. Lance is known for his role in John Wick as hotel Manager, Charon, and Commander Zavala from the Destiny franchise.

I’m certainly hoping for this game’s success. Independent American comics deserve more recognition, especially within the modern superhero-dominated market. Hellboy: Web of Wyrd will be released in 2023 for PC and all consoles.
