I’ve never played any of From Software’s games but have always had great respect for everything they release. Elden Ring is the first game by the studio that had me seriously considering jumping into the studio’s famously difficult action RPGs. However, with many games still on my to-play list, it will take me a while to get there.
Fortunately, a recent announcement will allow me to experience the world of Elden Ring without having to forgo other games I’m looking forward to. Steamforged Games has recently announced a Kickstarter for a board game based on Elden Ring. Stated to be an open-world dungeon hybrid the game is designed for 1-4 players and features a deep narrative campaign that can be experienced through multiple sessions.
Just like the original IP, the board game will also allow for deep character customization and exploration. I’m particularly impressed by the exploration aspect as the board is gradually built by players using hexagonal tiles as they advance through the story. This ensures that each session will be wholly unique and perfectly captures a key feature of Elden Ring.
Unlike most other tabletop RPG games, the combat for this game is not based on rolling dice. Instead, players fight using a combination of cards and strategic, grid-based movement. This is a unique choice that I am interested to try. As a huge TCG addict and deck brewer, I love it when board games include deck building as a core aspect of gameplay. It allows for a nice mix of both personalization and self-expression. The game also boasts an incredible lineup of gorgeously constructed miniatures featuring bosses that will no doubt satisfy fans of the video game
Currently, the Kickstarter has already obliterated its 181,000 dollar goal and is sitting at around 2 million with a week still to go on the campaign. I’m happy to see this level of success reach the project. No doubt it will allow the game to be more widely distributed in the future and receive continued expansions.
