Even now after ten years, in a genre where most players will leave to check out the next best thing, Skullgirls is still considered an indie darling. A passionate community has stood by and supported the game through thick and thin. They’ve supported it when the mobile game was its best bet and have seen it reach grander heights with an ongoing season pass as well as a main stage spot at this year’s EVO Championship Series. There should be no surprise that it’s remained a relevant name. That relevancy also means that plans to expand into other media are always a possibility. In this case, that involved a comic series.

It was first announced over three years ago that an official Skullgirls series with Webtoon was in early pre-production. However, between the COVID pandemic and the dissolution of developer Lab Zero Games in 2020, its fate was left in the air. After so long without any news, it was assumed by many to have been shelved. Naturally, the announcement last week that the Webtoon series would be launching on November 18th came as a huge surprise.

Like the initial announcement, the art is still being done by @Wiirdo & @pasteldot. Fans and community members are likely to have seen their work before, including an adorable alternate universe fan comic called Skulldudes. This time around we also know the writing will be handled by @MikeExner3 and that additional chapters are set to come out every week.

From the promo artwork, it can be assumed that Ms. Fortune and Parasoul will be the main characters. It’s worth noting that the former is being drawn in a different outfit than her default look that conveniently hides where her scars are and puts to question when the story will take place. While it seems likely that it’s based before the events of the main game, we’ll likely find out for sure tomorrow when the comic launches.

Samuel Moreno

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
