It’s been a while since the launch of NBA 2K23 and I’m thrilled with this year’s release. The actual gameplay itself is lovely, and while I don’t mess with online too much, there’s a lot to love in the single-player experience. My favorite thing to do in the game is to rebuild teams in MyFranchise mode, pushing 5-9 years of seasons into a lengthy challenge. From what I’ve played this year, here are the best teams to rebuild in NBA2K23 that require a little creativity and skill from the player’s end.

Charlotte Hornets NBA2k23 MyFranchise Rebuild

I don’t need to explain the initial draw of this one, right? LaMello Ball is an absolute fiend in 2K but he only improves over time. By the 2024 season, he rose to a 95 overall and was regularly making All-NBA teams. The Plumlee and Hayward contracts are easy to trade from the get-go for a little bit of a return. You also can’t count out Terry Rozier as a solid number two to the team.

There’s some really great room here to grow younger players as well. Jalen McDaniels and P.J. Washington are both 24 and have some solid contributions to make if rotated correctly. Kelly Oubre Jr. is also a wonderful sixth man if you’re able to pick up a more suitable starter in the Plumlee or Hayward deals. If not, you can ride the first season with who you have and likely make the play-in tournament. The ball is in your court, and no, I’m not sorry for the pun.

Fun in the Sun with the…Suns

It’s not necessarily shocking that the Phoenix Suns are a good team to toy around with in MyFranchise mode. Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton, and Mikal Bridges are a solid core, but you have something really interesting to explore with the Chris Paul piece of the pie. Do you keep the aging star and run it back one more time for a chance at the Championship? I didn’t, just to see what I could muster up, and here’s what happened.

I ended up moving Paul for a younger PG and a backup center. I won’t say who, just in case you follow the same path. I didn’t compete for a title the first year but building a younger core as the contracts added up ended up working to my advantage. The Suns are built to win now, but they haven’t been able to finish the job. Taking a year to work around the fringes of your roster has some fun options at your disposal, making this a great rebuild option.

Blast Off with the Rockets

Lastly, let’s talk about one of the more desperate teams in the NBA that needs a rework. The Houston Rockets are wildly in need of direction, and despite some great younger players, there is a lot of work needing to be done. While options like Usman Garuba, Alperen Sengun, and Jabari Smith give the team a bright future, it’s your job to make it shine.

Seeing the first few years play out is a lot of waiting. You will not be competing for the NBA title right away, but if you play your cards right, including a potential tank for Victor Wembanyama in a user-created 2023 NBA Draft class, you can end up being one of the best teams in the mid-2020s. Let me know what other teams you’d like to hear about in MyFranchise in the comments!
