It may be cute, but this robot has teeth! In this zanny game you play as Dusty, the loyal killer robot vacuum of the McClean family, who is on a mission to save them from the evil FamilyCorp. Dusty must team up with its fighting spirit, Sexy McClean, in order to stop the nefarious FamilyCorp and bring the McClean family home! The story starts out with a simple home robbery that Dusty has to foil, but FamilyCorp is quick to take notice of Dusty’s unique ability to take out these would-be robbers. So, they decide to pay you a little visit, and that is when this crazy adventure straight out of a 90s film comes to life!
I first heard of Justice Sucks when I was planning my trip to PAX East 2022 and knew that it was going to be a unique experience. The demo that they showed there was an amazing experience and showed an amazing amount of improvement from the game’s predecessor, Roombo: First Blood. I remember playing the predecessor once I got back from PAX and it felt nothing like Justice Sucks‘ demo. It was slightly annoying, but it just made me circle the release date on my calendar and wait for the game to come out so that I could release carnage on FamilyCorp’s henchmen. For those who have played the predecessor, this is definitely the killer roomba game of your dreams! For those who haven’t played the previous one, just focus on Justice Sucks. There is no linking story between the two, just similar game styles and concept, so you aren’t going to miss out on much.
The level system that Justice Sucks uses is quite an interesting way to keep things fresh throughout your first run of the game. Each level that you complete goes towards your rank, which will allow you to move on to different levels. Each level has various stages that grant you different abilities that you can equip onto Dusty. You also get an additional bar of health or stamina when you go up a rank, which you can switch up on each stage depending on what you need to finish it. The replayability factor quickly becomes apparent as there is a leaderboard that is available for every stage. If that isn’t motivation enough, you can always go back to earlier stages in order to get a higher rank by using different abilities that you have unlocked.
One of the main abilities that Dusty has is the ability to suck up various objects around it in order to shoot at the enemies. This is one of my favorite things to do in Justice Sucks because you can suck up everything from caution signs to blocks to cats and much more! Also, before you worry about it, no cats are harmed in the sucking up process. Any animals that you end up sucking up will sit on top of Dusty until you decide to fire the animal at an enemy. Each animal has its own devastating animation that will render an enemy dazed for longer than most inanimate objects. Another game mechanic that I absolutely love are any of the special abilities that allow you to utilize Sexy McClean. My personal favorite is one where Sexy McClean will appear and punch an enemy straight in the jaw, which will send them flying across the map.
I found Justice Sucks to be a great way for me to de-stress after a difficult day, since it is very easy to pick up and put down. The controls are also very easy to understand, so it doesn’t take a long time for anyone to learn. In fact, the first few stages ease you into the game mechanics in such a way that works with the story and it doesn’t deter from the overall experience. While Justice Sucks isn’t long, it is definitely well worth the full $20 price tag due to the different ways that you can play the game and the almost infinite replayability that rarely gets boring or repetitive. This is a game that I can see myself playing again and again when I need a break from frustrating games or tasks. Justice Sucks has definitely lived up to my expectations and is easily in my top ten favorite games of this year!
