Cyberpunk 2077 has been run through the wringer a lot since its release back in December of 2020, or as I think most would like to say, its early access release. To say there were problems skips over a whole lot of issues many people had with one of the most hyped-up releases of the last decade. Simple gameplay features missing, bugs that would make the game near unplayable, and actual performance on 8th generation hardware that was laughable how it supposedly passed QA testing. Nonetheless, those of us who could actually get it to work reasonably well still had issues with the cops, and not for who they were arresting unnecessarily.

As noted by PC Gamer‘s Christopher Livingston, the Night City Wire (Nintendo Direct-style showcase) on Tuesday had a special little line from game director Gabe Amatangelo. Talking about upcoming features, Amatangelo said, “… I was talking about we’re kind of overhauling some systems and laying the groundwork for future stuff. [A] hugely requested feature from the community is coming up, and that is a complete overhaul to the cop system as well as vehicle-to-vehicle combat.” Easily one of the biggest faults of this GTA-like, futuristic, open-world was the shambolic state that cops would spawn in upon release. Even recently, though now they are rendered a little further away.

As Livingston and anyone who has played Cyberpunk 2077 will tell you, this is a feature that should have been in the title from the get-go. 18 months post-release and we’re finally getting the announcement of an overhaul? These are the reasons why I think it is fair to call CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 an early access triple-A title, the actual state of it is comparable to Steam Greenlight releases. Of course, I say this as someone who recently went back in March to play, and the video I did on it ends with a bug that broke the main quest until I reloaded. Hopefully one day it can be only a bit of a mess instead of a complete catastrophe.

At the time of publication, there has been no announcement of the timeline for this overhaul. One just hopes it comes before another 18 months pass.
