Every year I hear people talking about the movie Die Hard. Some people say it is a Christmas movie, some say that it isn’t. This debate got me thinking about one of my favorite gaming franchises of all time. I decided a few years back that Bayonetta 2 was the perfect game for the holiday season. With Bayonetta 3 coming out in October, I figured it was a good time to revisit this topic.
By this point, you are probably looking at your monitor confused, befuddled, or downright perplexed. You probably think that I have lost my mind, or that you have entered some strange twilight zone where Bayonetta is compared to Bruce Willis in some strange fashion. Do not adjust your PC, tablet, or phone screen. What you are seeing is actually there, and here is my reasoning.
At the very beginning of Bayonetta 2, the titular heroine is shopping with Enzo. Enzo is looking for Christmas gifts for his children, and Bayonetta tags along to get items for a Christmas Party she is throwing with Jeanne. After the opening mission, the Christmas references are toned down a fair bit; however, this is just part of my reasoning.
Throughout the game, Rodin is dressed up as Santa, and there are various references to Christmas and holidays all throughout the game. If you really want to up the ante though, you can dress Bayonetta up in the Link costume, and just tell people she’s a Christmas elf.
Bayonetta 2 on Nintendo Switch is also a great game to use as a Christmas gift. It is one of my favorite action games of all time, and there is plenty to enjoy in terms of hack-and-slash combat. I personally believe that Bayonetta 2 has so much replay value, that it could easily become a Christmas tradition for anyone that likes those types of games.
With Bayonetta 3 coming in October, perhaps this is the perfect time to dive back into Bayonetta 2 and enjoy all that holiday goodness a little early. This is especially true if you’re feeling a little down and want to get prematurely festive. Do you need a bit of action-y goodness with a side of holiday cheer? Sounds like you need a visit from the Witch of Christmas Past, Bayonetta.
Honestly, though, it doesn’t particularly matter if Die Hard is a Christmas movie, or Bayonetta 2 is a Christmas game. As long as you are having fun over the holiday or whenever you need some festive cheer, that is what matters. The spirit of the holidays is about having fun and doing things you enjoy.
If retail stores can start putting out their Christmas/Holiday decorations in August (yes I’ve seen it) you can enjoy a festive game. So please consider spending some time with Bayonetta and her pals, you won’t be disappointed.
