Today, I give a confession. In RPGs and games in general, I have a hoarding problem. I will spend *hours* in games like Minecraft or in RPGs managing my inventory and making sure I optimize my bag space as much as possible. Thankfully the developers of Backpack Hero seem to understand my problem and have built an entire game around it.

In Backpack Hero, you play as my truest of selves, a literal packrat. You delve into a dungeon searching for ancient cheeses that are aged within its depths. Your only companion on this journey is a magical expanding backpack, and the loot you claim along your journey. Where you place items in your bag is important, as certain items synergize with one another if placed correctly.

You are constantly reorganizing your bag and working to fit new things into it as well as optimizing your current contents. Do you pick up a great item even though you have to sacrifice something else? Or do you keep what you have and hope you won’t need that item later? It looks to me like Backpack Hero is about making those tough inventory decisions.

According to the Steam Page, the devs of Backpack Hero intend for the game to be in Early Access for about 7 months. They intend to add new characters, meta progression in an overworld, more items, dungeons, and much more. As of the Early Access release, it has 3 characters, over 300 items, and a variety of enemies and NPCs to encounter.

Backpack Hero has been getting some traction on Steam, and I am glad to see it. The game looks cute, and it scratches that weird hybrid itch of the energy system of a deck builder, with the urge to organize my back just to make sure I have everything set up correctly. It sounds like a weird premise at first, but it looks to be something that people will be talking about for a while.
