Today marks a big day for the free-to-play platform fighter MultiVersus. After a playable alpha back in May and an early access beta that started last week with The Iron Giant as a new character, the game has entered its public open beta. This means that anyone will be able to try the game out through the many platforms that it’s available on.

Although it is a beta, player progression is set to carry forward without any resets. Eventually, it should have a proper 1.0 launch date of some sort as well. However, all players can begin to enjoy the game now with its important modes and systems in place. It’s also expected to be updated with new content from here on out such as maps and characters. We already have confirmation of two characters set to appear during the first season, and a new character being added with the launch of the open beta.

Professional basketball player Lebron James is the latest character to be added to the game. While all the characters released so far have been under the expansive Warner Bros. umbrella and do include non-animated characters such as Arya Stark from Game of Thrones, Lebron James is a real-life sports athlete who is not owned by a mass media conglomerate. How he manages to fit in is that he did star as a fictional version of himself in the 2021 film, Space Jam: A New Legacy. Within the game, he’s based on this character with John Bentley providing the voice for him.

In much more expected new character news, it’s also been announced that Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith from the popular Rick & Morty series will be added during the game’s first season. Aside from the two of them being separate characters and not a pair like Tom & Jerry, not much else is known. All three of these characters do set a wild precedent on which characters may be added next. There are a lot of Warner Bros.-owned properties and with how diverse the roster already is, the sky is the limit.
