Illfonic was already on my list of developers to look out for considering that they are working on Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, which is an asymmetrical horror game (aka my favorite genre). However, when I heard that Illfonic was making a third-person platform shooter, I decided that this was something worth taking a test spin on. Little did I know that this game would get me hooked with its gameplay, artistic style, and many other elements that set it apart from the rest of the games coming out these days! Let’s break this game down one thing at a time!

The mechanics of the game are rather straightforward, which is refreshing for a game market stuffed with complex titles. You have the simple controls of walking around, jumping, and firing the weapons that you get. As a result, there is not too much of a learning curve for the basics of the game.

The things to master are the variety of weapons that you have at your disposal, the special abilities that you can unlock, and the way enemies evolve over the various difficulties of the stages. Moving around the map is also interesting, as the game has quite a few ways to get around. Additionally, it helps that there is no fall damage!

The one thing that really gives the main hub some life is the various gangs that exist around the arcade. Half of them currently want nothing to do with you, or at least they didn’t at my current level. However, there are talkative gang leaders that give you quests that you can take to quickly gain levels.

All of these gang missions also allow you to fill up your closet with unique outfits. They also give you power tokens that can be used to unlock various upgrades. Most of these gangs and the gang leaders have a reference to some part of gaming culture, so you can probably figure out how knowledgeable you are based on what you recognize.

The customization in this game is one of the key factors that will make you continue to come back to the game. You can have everything from a futuristic-looking cyborg to a kid in a hoodie and sweatpants. You can also customize your weapons with various skins that allow you to stand out even more within the game.

Most of these cosmetic looks can be unlocked through tickets that you earn in-game or with gems that you can purchase from the game store. The customization is not just limited there as you can unlock gauntlet abilities with power tokens. These tokens will allow you to spawn various things to help you in the main game mode.

The bosses are something that can either make or break a run. With four different bosses that are selected randomly, it can sometimes be dangerous to go into an engagement without certain weapons. However, the awards for doing a boss battle are amazing! It gives you a map that is loaded with health kits and ammo boxes, so you are set for the next map if you successfully beat the boss.

The only thing that might hinder you is that doing a boss battle will increase the difficulty level of the next stage. As you might expect, that can put you in a different kind of danger. Over my time playing the game, I have only encountered two of the bosses, so I have quite a bit still in store!

The multiplayer was a part of the game that I didn’t try until the game came out, but I wish that I had been able to try it sooner! The multiplayer is really fun and provides a compact competitive experience where you face off against three other players in eight rounds. Each round features a game mode where you are either capturing objectives or trying to kill the other players with random weapons.

Sometimes you are even paired up with another player, which allows for a great variety of strategies and different skill sets to be used. Each round earns you a certain amount of points based on how well you did. The scores at the end of eight rounds determine who is the winner!

Overall, Arcadegeddon is an amazing game that truly shows off the best of the gaming industry right now! With this game being so well done, I have no doubt that the other projects that Illfonic is working on will be just as good. The only major gripe that I have with the game is that it is only on Epic for PC, but I remain hopeful that the game will eventually come to Steam so that all PC players can enjoy this amazing title!
