I think anyone that has grown up with Pokémon or Digimon can agree that monster-taming games and media are a blast. I’m always curious to see indie takes on the monster-taming genre because indie developers have begun adding unique twists on things. Beasties is a new take on this from studio rokaplay and publisher Just For Games.

Interestingly enough, Beasties breaks the mold in two ways. The first way is that Beasties is a Match-3 game, that blends monster-taming elements with typical Match-3 gameplay. The second reason it breaks the mold is that it has released on Nintendo Switch before Steam. The Steam version will be available on August 1st, while the Nintendo Switch version is available now.

Here is what the press release has to say about Beasties.

Combining the casual and relaxing gameplay of match-3 puzzles and the thrilling collection of beautifully designed creatures, Beasties is a different take on the genre that will appeal to all kinds of players. More content and Beasties will be unveiled soon, for a prolongated experience after the game’s launch!

The Beasties live in complete harmony and symbiosis with humans. But this harmony gets cracked after the disappearance of a Beastiemaster. The guild of Beastiemasters sends you to an isolated village to find out what happened to the master. Will you find the master and restore the old balance?”

If you’re looking for something a little different, Beasties looks like a good option. If you don’t have a Switch, then you’ll have to wait for the Steam release though. Either way, Match-3 fans should have a blast with this one.
