It seems like an odd time to announce the release date for F1 Manager 2022, given we’ve just passed the Monaco Grand Prix and are now heading into the less prestigious Azerbaijan race this weekend. Nonetheless, the release date and a few more details have been revealed for the latest addition to the games bearing the Formula 1 name, F1 Manager 2022. Announced back in March, the prospect of joining the F1 paddock as team boss was instantly an intriguing one. Especially since much of the show and analysis aspect has begun to focus on figures like Horner and Wolff.
Announced yesterday in a press release, F1 Manager 2022 will be heading to the PC, PS5/PS4, and Xbox Series X|S/Xbox One ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix. Specifically, it will release on the 25th for those that decide to pre-order and the 30th for regular release. We also got a hint of what to expect alongside how we as team principles will interact with the races. Played out broadcast-style, races will be overlayed with a few controls to help you make decisions, while Karun Chandhok and David Croft do their best to can some lines. I’m not taking anything away from them or whoever wrote the lines, but they are generic and they always will be because of the game.
I am excited for F1 Manager 2022, though expectations need to be tempered here. Frontier Developments make wonderful management games, as well as Jurassic World Evolution, often with wonderful creative depth (aside from Jurassic World Evolution). From the trailer and the press release, the majority of the time will be spent on managing the team back at base to optimize the total package: From team management to race setup. The only thing off about the press release is the note about still being able to decide which tires you bring to the race, a decision I believe was scrubbed from the rule book for this year.
Canned lines that are generic and possible rule changes that are a little off aside, the idea of growing a world championship-winning team to best the rest sounds fun. Especially as the summer break comes to an end in F1 around the time of release, diving head-first into the proto-technically side with all the smoke and mirrors of a management game. With a few months to go, I’m hoping we’ll see more detailed looks at the meat and potatoes of gameplay rather than short slices intermittently spliced in with the action on the track. Either way, I’m excited to see what releases in late August.
