Although many would point to Skullgirls as the indie darling in the fighting game genre, there is another indie title with a strong community behind it. Them’s Fightin’ Herds is a 1v1 fighting game featuring adorable hooved animals by developer Mane6. It originally started over 10 years ago as a fanmade game based on the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic series but the team would end up having to use original designs and their own IP. The game was released to early access on PC in 2018, had a full release in 2020, and now with more support after Mane6 was acquired by publisher Modus Games, is expanding to more platforms.

This Fall the game will release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. In addition to digital versions, there will also be physical versions released for the game on all platforms as well. One of the most exciting aspects is that the Steam version’s GGPO rollback netcode will be used on all console versions. Unlike Arc System Works’ having to forego the Nintendo Switch versions of BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax when updating them with rollback netcode, Mane6 likely had an easier time implementing it on all platforms with the original game already having it.

On top of rollback netcode, there will also be crossplay enabled between every platform. Crossplay and rollback were some of my favorite highlights when I played the recent closed alpha for the platform fighter MultiVersus and I’m happy to see another fighting game prioritizing these elements.

Equally exciting to current owners and any potential new ones is that a season pass with four more characters is also in development. It will cost $19.99 and come with an exclusive palette pack and lobby fashion pack. Anybody interested in owning a physical copy will be happy to know that the retail deluxe edition will include the previous DLC character Shanty as well as the Season 1 pass for $39.99.

There are good reasons why the game is so beloved by its community. Fans love how the characters look, especially when they were designed with help from the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic series creator Lauren Faust. A helpful tutorial and training mode make it beginner-friendly, and a properly implemented rollback netcode ensures quality online play. This massive expansion to new platforms with crossplay and an upcoming season pass of content can help Them’s Fightin’ Herds grow to new heights and presents a new gateway title to the niche fighting game genre.

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
