I think we can all agree that God of War: Ragnarok is one of the most highly anticipated games for the year. We’re all ready to see what Atreus and Kratos do next, especially with the arrival of Thor at the end of the last game. However, an unexpected bit of news via the PlayStation Blog has gotten me even more excited for the upcoming sequel.

God of War: Ragnarok’s development team has been hard at work not only on implementing accessibility options from the previous game but also on adding new ones. According to the blog post, more than 60 new accessibility options are available in the upcoming sequel, on top of what was already there. Here is a small snippet of what the blog post has to say on the topic.

The prophecy of Ragnarök brings changes to all the Realms, and with that, we’re excited to announce some new accessibility features that will be available in God of War Ragnarök.

Not only have we redesigned our UI to allow for more flexibility and readability, but we have also rebuilt controller remapping from the ground up and added more customization to our combat and interaction systems. We have retained all our accessibility features from 2018’s God of War and expanded upon them to include more than 60 ways to adjust gameplay to best suit your style and needs.

A few added examples are things such as new text and subtitle options, navigation assistance, new controller remapping options, audio cues for visually impaired people, and more. The list of things mentioned in the blog post also happens to be just the tip of the iceberg, as Sony Santa Monica has announced that there are far more options than just the ones they’ve mentioned in this recent news release.

I’ve said it before, but Accessibility options help more than just the disabled. We’re all getting older, and there are gamers who have been playing games since the 80s that still enjoy digging into them now. We shouldn’t leave behind the older generations as we shift into more mechanically demanding games. We’re all going to need some of these options eventually. Plus, some of the text ones will make things easier for folks who want to see the text from farther away such as sitting on a couch.
