While I have been dipping my toes into the world of Elden Ring, I’m not what most people would consider a Soulslike devotee. I’m not a huge fan of the “difficulty for difficulty’s sake” style of gaming, since I find myself more focused on the story and the urge to explore new worlds and great combat systems. However, when Loot River was announced last year, I was immediately intrigued.

Something about the concept of blending a Roguelike (even with Souls-style difficulty) and Tetris caught my attention. Granted, you’re only moving platforms around, but it is still a very clever and unique concept. Publisher SUPERHOT PRESENTS has teamed up with straka.studio for Loot River, and you can play it now on PC and Xbox consoles.

Here is what the press release has to say about Loot River. “Head off on a journey into the labyrinthine procedurally-generated waterways of Loot River to discover a rich combat system, a varied bestiary of cursed enemies, and a bounty of build-changing weapons, spells, and other loot. You will find yourself exploring a rich world where wandering nomads, drawn by shards of an unholy relic, have found themselves stuck in a perpetual cycle of life and death, losing their sanity as they journey through endless parallel realities, devouring each other to absorb the knowledge of their fellow travelers.

No two journeys are ever the same as countless lost souls float through the Loot River. In Loot River, players are able to harness the power of the Relic to shift the ground beneath them, sliding around on the floating pieces of ruined landscapes. These Tetris-like blocks can be slotted together to solve spatial exploration puzzles and employed creatively as a tool in combat to manipulate enemies and control the space on which your battles take place. Venturing through these endless catacombs, players will encounter horrifying beasts, lost travelers, and epic bosses.

As players explore the ruined waterways of Loot River, they can discover a wealth of new weapons, gear, spells, and unholy knowledge: swords that thrust you forward towards enemies; axes that shoot projectiles; elemental enchantments; spells; armor and charms that imbue you with unique abilities. Combining these to create powerful and surprising synergies is crucial in helping you get further with each run.”

Creative Director Miro Straka also commented on the release, stating: “I’m thrilled that Loot River is finally available on Xbox and PC today. I’m really excited to see which of the game’s many secrets players are able to uncover and what kind of creative builds they come up with to help them take on the challenging procedurally-generated dungeons and tough bosses we’ve created to test their skills!”

You can purchase Loot River now on PC and Xbox consoles, but if you’re a Game Pass subscriber you can play it free now as well. I love games that take a familiar concept and screw with them a little, so this is a game to check out if you like something a little different.
