Since Fire Emblem Fates was released, Intelligent Systems has tried out various ways of creating a multi-perspective story. In Fire Emblem Fates, each path was a different version of the game, with Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation presenting what is considered the “true path.” Fire Emblem: Three Houses presented 3 altering paths, without a true ending. Will Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes change this?
This is a widely debated topic right now amongst Fire Emblem: Three Houses fans. Some people suggest that the inclusion of a new character that opposes Byleth might bring out the opportunity for a genuine conclusion. This theory is bolstered by fans due to the fact that you can choose Byleth’s gender in Three Hopes like you can in Three Houses. This should mean that Byleth is playable at some point or another, despite being framed in promotional material as an antagonist.
However, there are a few other tidbits that make me wonder if we’ll get a true ending. For one, it seems that regardless of the path you take, you’ll fight against Rhea and the Church of Seiros at some point. Usually, that only happens if you side with Edelgard, though I won’t go into full spoilers on that. Does this mean her quest is canon? Or, does this mean that the other two houses will join her or see what Rhea’s real motivations are?
What about the faction known as “Those who Slither in the Dark”? How will they factor into things? At the end of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, regardless of your ending, they still are a threat. Does this mean they may take a more central antagonist role? It also helps that there are plenty of new character designs for the Three Houses characters, so perhaps the “time skip” won’t actually be happening this time around.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity changed Breath of the Wild’s canon in some pretty interesting ways. Of course, it isn’t a canon story. However, with Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, this could potentially wind up creating a plot that very well could be made canon, unless Intelligent Systems decides to make a sequel to Three Houses that wraps up some plot threads.
Either way, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes should provide plenty of interesting plot moments and character development for characters we’ve all gotten attached to via Three Houses. I’m also curious as to whether we’ll see the Ashen Wolves in the base game or if they will be DLC for Three Hopes in a similar fashion to their DLC status in Three Houses. Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes will release on June 24th, 2022.
