It’s been a month since the release of Wolfeye Studio’s Weird West. During that time, the development team has been hard at work taking in player feedback to tweak systems and add new content. Patch 1.01 went live a bit over a week after the game launched and brought with it numerous bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements. The upcoming patch 1.02 will add more bug fixes, new content, and new features.
Everything that’s being added in this patch has been detailed through the game’s Steam news hub over the last week and a half. When it comes to bug fixes, there is a dense list that can be seen right here. It’s admittedly nice to see so many fixes going through as I can attest to having encountered more than one of the listed bugs when I reviewed the game.
Many players will be interested in everything new that is coming with the latest patch. Content-wise two new travel encounters are being added, as well as new scenarios for Wraiths and Ridgebacks in the abandoned mine locations. Also helping to freshen things up is a new Natural Cave map and a new Hacienda map.
The biggest additions may just be with their new features and overhauled systems. Combat-related additions include blunt weapons and non-weapon melee attacks knocking people out instead of killing them. Additionally, unaware NPCs can be one-shot killed by a melee weapon. The projectile aiming system has been revamped so that players can control where to throw things using their mouse or control stick. Previously, only the direction could be freely controlled and then the distance had to be manually adjusted.
Finally, there have also been some UI changes. Instead of needing to individually sort out each posse member’s inventory in action, it now brings up a pausing UI screen with an expanded grid size and the ability to transfer items between all posse members and your horse.
According to the team, Patch 1.03 is expected to focus on “a full game economy and player & difficulty progression overhaul and a strong pass on AI, Stealth and Companions.” Work is expected to begin on that once Patch 1.02 ships this Friday, May 6th. If you’re interested in what else they may be planning, there is an official Weird West Suggestion Board that shows what features they’re working on or looking into.
This also runs alongside the game’s roadmap for community events. A couple of weeks after the game launched it had a Plague live event, which basically added in a zombie apocalypse. More live events and features are set to be added over time for free, including mods.
