On March 31st, one of my most anticipated games of this year came to Steam Early Access! That game is Midnight Ghost Hunt by Vaulted Sky Games and Coffee Stain Publishing. All the way back in January, I was given closed beta access to Midnight Ghost Hunt. While the game is still in Early Access, I don’t believe that it is appropriate to give the game a proper scoring review, but I do want to give all of you the differences I felt between the two builds and discuss what the game feels like now. Let’s begin!

Before we get into this, let me share with you what the game is about. The game developers describe the game as “a multiplayer hide-and-seek game! Play as either Ghosts or Ghost Hunters. Ghosts can possess and hide inside inconspicuous furniture and hurl themselves at invading Hunters. Hunters must find and destroy all of the Ghosts before the clock strikes MIDNIGHT. At MIDNIGHT, all dead Ghosts return as vengeful spirits! The tables turn, the Hunters become the Hunted! They must try to survive the Ghost onslaught until evac can arrive.” This explanation fully captures the game. However, the lovely way that the players troll each other during the game and interact with each other is a breath of fresh air compared to other Asymmetrical Horror games.

When I first dived into the Closed Beta, there was no way to capture any images or videos of the game, but people were able to share some of their opinions. When I found out about that, I was shocked. The game seemed to be relatively well-balanced and really fun! The only downsides that I really saw were that some of the weapons and abilities were a bit clunky.

The biggest thing that I remember was the melee of the ghosts in their natural form had a bit of a delay that made it hard to keep up the pressure on the hunters. Now I should also note that the game was also a bit more difficult to learn in my opinion during the Closed Beta. Mostly because this was a brand new type of game despite being in the same genre as VHS, Propnight, and Dead by Daylight.

Now with the game being available in Early Access on Steam, everyone is able to enjoy and share the game! Midnight Ghost Hunt coming to this phase also means that the developers have tweaked quite a few things compared to the version that I initially played in January. The first thing that I noticed was that the movement of the hunters and ghosts seemed to be more fluid.

There was also a noticeable change in the combat abilities of the ghosts and hunters, with both of them getting reworks to make combat both more challenging, but also more unpredictable. In fact, I noticed that the melee on ghosts and the machine gun for the hunters felt much easier to use compared to how they were in the closed beta.

Overall, I have to say that the game looks very promising and I encourage all of you to purchase the game in order to support the developers. While it will be quite a bit of time before we see the game at its full potential and are able to give it a score, I look forward to seeing what this amazing team of developers do over the coming months and years with this title.
