The Monkey Island series is a beloved Point-and-Click franchise that has been around for three decades in various forms. However, it has been over a decade since we’ve seen a new entry in the franchise. Now, fans of the Monkey Island games are in luck, as a new one is on its way later this year!
Originally thought to be an April Fool’s Joke from series Co-Creator Ron Gilbert, it seems that the original team is back for a new Monkey Island game. Announced by Devolver Digital, Return to Monkey Island is being created by Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman, who co-created the series. Dominic Armato will also return as the voice for Guybrush Threepwood.
Return to Monkey Island is a sequel to Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, which is currently available for free with Prime Gaming thanks to the release of Monkey Island 2 Special Edition back in 2010. With LucasFilm Games working with Ron Gilbert, does this mean we might get a new Grim Fandango? That could be a cool idea.
Either way, it is always good to see a beloved franchise back in the hands of the people that created it and made it a success. I hope that fans of the Monkey Island franchise will see plenty of good things when Return to Monkey Island releases this year. We don’t know much about the game yet, including release platforms or a full release date.
However, it is likely that they will at least be putting it on PC. Though there are plenty of Point-and-Click games on Nintendo Switch and other platforms too, so maybe it’ll get ported at some point. Ron Gilbert framing this announcement as an April Fool’s joke was also sort of genius. A “gotcha!” moment only to reveal that it was in fact happening. I love seeing fans of older franchises get hyped about a new entry in a franchise.
