Yesterday, I spent some time talking about Chinese Indie games, which haven’t always had the chance to really flourish. Now, I’m excited to mention a new game that seems to be getting some pretty solid success on Kickstarter. Afterimage is a brand new Metroidvania from developer Aurogon Shanghai that is fully funded on Kickstarter!

Afterimage surpassed its funding target in 40 hours, and is now over 260% funded in a single week! That’s a crazy level of success for a Kickstarter campaign from a new dev. The Kickstarter campaign will end on April 21st, but the developers have offered a free demo on Steam! There will also be new stretch goals added, so continuing to support the project is important.

Here is what the press release has to say about Afterimage. “Inspired by legendary Metroidvania games like Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night and Ori and the Blind Forest, Afterimage takes place in the imaginative world of Engardin. Once a magnificent realm of magical life and fantastic beasts, the land has been ravaged by the folly of human ambition and warfare. A calamitous event has ruined the land, corrupting the souls and behavior of native species and humans alike.

Embark on a journey as Renee, a girl who lost her memory during the great catastrophe, as she retraces her steps to uncover past memories. Explore vast interconnected areas, traverse complex platform puzzles, and encounter amusing characters that may help or hinder Renee’s journey. Discover a hauntingly beautiful yet dangerous world using Renee’s graceful weapon attacks and magic spells to defeat menacing and bizarre enemies.

As Renee recovers lost memories and delves deeper into this hauntingly beautiful hand-drawn world, new weapons, skills, and magic spells will be learned. Customize the talent tree to upgrade Renee’s attributes, utilize passive abilities to bolster fighting techniques, and switch weapons on-the-fly during challenging boss fights. Gather tons of collectible loot and look out for lost recipes – give these to wandering chefs and they’ll make mouth-watering dishes with unique buffs!

Personally, I think Afterimage is a really cool idea. Also, as I mentioned in yesterday’s news, I really like the idea of developers getting a seat at the table when they didn’t have it before. It never hurts to have more people creating great games for the community. The game looks beautiful too, so I can’t wait to see what it is like when it releases this Winter on PC and consoles.
