At this point, the Sniper Elite series has become the M*A*S*H* of World War II shooters, starting back in the mid-00s and still going far beyond the six years of the actual war’s length, spanning almost six whole games. Announced late last year, Sniper Elite 5 is something I personally can’t wait for because high-velocity vasectomies are always fun. Especially if the patient is: A) awake, and B) unaware he’s about to get the procedure done from 300 meters away with a gentle crosswind coming from the east, making it slightly tricky.
Announced late last week, the forthcoming high precision surgery simulator will take all the gravely-voiced Lieutenant Fairburnes to France this time around. You’ll be able to hear the German for “what was that sound?” before some time traveling shrubbery starts singing Bon Jovi like it was Karaoke night in the tent. The game is coming to the fronts of the PS4/PS5, Xbox One & Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam, Epic Games, and the Microsoft Store on the 26th of May. It also looks like we’re continuing on the Sniper Elite 4 tradition of colorful locals with a touch of German brains making it all a bit messy.
Back when the game was revealed in December, Rebellion offered up a FAQ and while all platforms have been announced, the developer did say, “There are no concrete plans for a Switch version of Sniper Elite 5 at this point in time.” Pre-orders are available on all announced platforms, and the pre-order incentives have also been announced. Once again, you’ll be able to make Adolf testicle-less in the Führer campaign mission and will get access to the P.1938 suppressor pistol. Set in 1944 France this time around, you’ll explore some of the largest maps in Sniper Elite history.
However, that’s not the only addition to this latest surgical simulation game. With the success of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring, seemingly everything requires an invasion mode. With the mode, another player will be able to do the titular invasion of your game and become an Axis sniper, attempting to take you out. Of course, if you would rather just play the game without the hassle of some kind of asymmetrical multiplayer, you can. The option to opt-out was revealed when the announcement of the mode was made about a month or so ago. I, for one, can’t wait to go to France this May.
