Did I actually invent a time-machine at some point, because a lot of what I like the most has a release date for this year? We have Two Point CampusWWE 2K22 has a GM mode (which I take credit for), and Frontier’s Planet Coaster and Planet Zoo, what else could I want? Yes, it is obvious, an F1 management sim would be like crack-cocaine to me, as I tell Toto Wolf to, in a PR-friendly way, take a short pier for a long walk. He and Horner connect like Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers and create Wingy Spice, and both need to “Stop.”

It is evident in the title, Frontier, the developer behind space-trucking excellence Elite DangerousRollerCoaster Tycoon 3 successor Planet Coaster, and the evolution of Zoo Tycoon with Planet Zoo, is set to release an F1 Manager this year. As a successor to 1995 and ’96’s Grand Prix Manager 1 and 2, one hopes it expands into gameplay that is actually fun to simulate rather than, as one critic argued “pay $50” to have the nightmarish experience of fighting with highly paid prima Donnas. Of course, in the announcement trailer revealing the game on Monday, we saw very little of that actual game.

The trailer features a voice-over of knock-off Sky Sports reporter Craig Slater, hyping up racing and generally hyping F1 to be greater than it actually is. Mate, it is simple mathematics and aerodynamics, the driver just needs to know one number is better than the other and the geometry of a corner to take the tightest line, while the team creates the best aerodynamic package. Sure, there are strategists defining tire compound choices, dirty Russian money to have an awful driver in your team, and racing in places like Saudi Arabia as moral superiority while saying everyone of any skin color, gender, or sexuality can be an F1 driver.

My snark aside, the press release goes into further detail about the authenticity of the upcoming release. There is a lot to unpack, from regulation changes, sponsors, and several decisions that will either make or break the success of whichever team you choose to play as. The one thing I ask is that with the ability to take the place of any team principle, that defines a larger portion of your initial difficulty. With Mercedes, Red Bull, or Ferarri you should get the boost of money, yet with taking the place of Franz Tost, Jost Capito, or everyone’s Drive to Survive favorite, Guenther Steiner, you have an actual struggle on your hands. That would be authentic, more so than basic difficulty options.

There is no word on exactly what platforms the game will appear on just yet, though the announcement does mention that a generalized release for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox will come this summer. While it was only a teaser, the end of the press release also notes that we’ll see “gameplay, developer insight, and more in the coming weeks.” Finally, we’re restricted to the release window of summer 2022, one may assume around the summer break in August at a guess. Either way, I am excited to see what comes next from Frontier when they finally reveal the gameplay of F1 Manager 2022.
