I’m a big fan of Match-3 games when they’re mixed with RPGs. Games like Puzzle Quest dominated parts of my childhood, and I never have managed to pass up a good puzzle/RPG hybrid. As a result, when I saw a press release for Crown of Pain, I couldn’t help but be curious. Crown of Pain is an Early Access title produced by Latvian studio Jagit Games, being published by Coldwild Games.

Crown of Pain is now available in Early Access, offering 4 playable characters to join your party and a 2–3-hour campaign that has a dark middle-ages aesthetic. Here is what the press release has to say about Crown of Pain.

You take the role of one of the heroes, each with their own troubles, looking for a solution, a way out of hardship. Heroes venture to the castle to find the elusive crown of pain, an artefact that is said to take away all of their worries. Driven by their troubles, they decide to take on something that they might not be able to handle.

Gameplay consists of combining heroes and selecting active abilities that are triggered by element matching. Traverse the map, participate in battles and prepare unique team builds with lots of possible synergies. Your team is very varied and the hero actions differ based on the colour matches. As you accumulate more faith, you can upgrade your heroes’ abilities including special attacks and maybe add a few mercenaries to your group. Do you have what it takes to reveal the heroes power?

The Steam page also mentions that there will be more characters, levels, and enemies added during the Early Access period. Said period is intended to be between 3 and 12 months, as they take community feedback. I should also mention that you can pick up Crown of Pain now, at a reduced price of $4.49 (regular $4.99) until the 22nd. I’m curious to see how Crown of Pain progresses, and I can’t wait to give it a try myself.
