It might seem crazy to think about it, but Final Fantasy VII first came out on January 31st, 1997. Not only did the title grow to be a hallmark classic in video game history, but it also spawned its the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII series which has featured multiple side games, a CGI-animated movie, and most recently Final Fantasy VII Remake and a pair of mobile titles.
The first of those mobile titles, Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, received a trailer for its second season during a livestream celebrating the original game’s 25th anniversary. Additionally, expectations were set in regards to Final Fantasy VII: Evercrisis and the follow-up to Final Fantasy VII Remake, which fans have been extremely parched for information about.
Yoshinori Kitase, the director for the original Final Fantasy VII, revealed that the team was hard at work on Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis and unveiled the opening movie. While there hasn’t been too much information on it recently, any news is good news if it’s still meant to release this year. As it is meant to feature various media from the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII with a unified art style and mechanics, there’s plenty of reason why so many fans are looking forward to the game.
The meteor-sized elephant was also acknowledged somewhat for when we could expect to hear more about the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake. Kitase mentioned that they would want to share more information during the 25th anniversary year if they could. That isn’t the most concrete estimate of when or even if we will hear news about what’s to come next. At the same time, it’s hard to imagine they won’t have the smallest inkling to show during this anniversary year.
In an anniversary message on Twitter, Tetsuya Nomura also teased some real big news in that other projects are in the works. “And there will be even more new FFVII projects that started up after the remake coming in future too. The team sees this 25th anniversary as a waypoint on our journey with FFVII, and will continue pressing ahead to even greater things, so please keep supporting us going forward!”
Brand new logos were also shown off to celebrate the 25th anniversary and I have to admit they do look pretty spectacular. Although it may not seem like many of these Final Fantasy VII-related projects have had any big direct news, Square Enix has been pretty tight-lipped about them. Talking about them for the anniversary as well as mentioning projects yet to be properly announced might just mean that this year will be an especially eventful one when it comes to the Final Fantasy VII universe.
