The perfect trilogy of media comes down to the comic books, the video game, and the movie. Scott Pilgrim is the weirdest trifecta to capture that tone wonderfully. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there could be a fourth media in the mix with the announcement of the Scott Pilgrim anime series coming to Netflix and the creator returning to write and produce the series. Though, of course, as with most project announcements, there are few to no details surrounding it at this time.
The series will be a joint production between Universal Content Productions (UCP) and Netflix, the two most notably known for working on Dark Horse Entertainment’s superhero series, The Umbrella Academy. The animation will be done by Japanese company Science SARU, who previously worked on Star Wars: Visions, one episode of Adventure Time, and of course, copious amounts of anime that’s a little more obscure. Alongside the comic creator, Bryan Lee O’Malley, is Spanish director at Science SARU Abel Góngora, and South Korean producer Eunyong Choi, as well as American producer Ben-David Grabinski [sans] behind the revival of the 90s horror anthology, Are You Afraid of the Dark.
At this early stage, there is no date set for release, though both O’Malley and Grabinski are on board to go on, and one would assume very few test frames have been drawn for the series at this time. Don’t expect Sex Bob-omb’s bassist to be fighting the evil Exes anytime soon. Though it does mark the first time in about a decade the franchise will be touched with a new project, following the Ubisoft game that O’Malley was badgered about regularly on Twitter following its disappearance from storefronts (and eventual return), and the Edger Wright film from 2010. O’Malley’s series with Oni Press concluded around the time of the film’s release back in 2010 after six years and six volumes.
Personally, I am excited to see what the team comes up with if/when production begins. At this time we’ve got no screenshots to say whether the animation/art direction is taking inspiration from the comics or if it will divert slightly, though I am hopeful. The biggest concern I have is Netflix’s involvement, as they’ve had a history of canning things likes Glow or that Cowboy Bebop thing through sheer incompetence or because people complained something isn’t perfectly to their tastes. Yes, I am annoyed people who already have the anime of Cowboy Bebop complained so hard they got rid of something good, thank you for noticing.
