As a huge Resident Evil fan, it has been absolutely wonderful to see so much love for the series over the last few years. Just last year, we saw the release of the incredible Resident Evil: Village my personal GOTY. There was also a B-rated movie that was at least more faithful than the bigger Hollywood adaptations we had before, a new CGI Netflix series that looked great with Leon and Claire but admittedly didn’t bring much else to the table, and a surprisingly decent VR version of the fan-favorite Resident Evil 4.
A lot of fans have been looking forward to hearing more news about what’s to come and thankfully we didn’t have to wait too long. In an interview with Famitsu, which was translated by Siliconera, Capcom gave a new year greeting alongside many other companies. While they did talk specifically about Monster Hunter and mentioned it’s the 35th anniversary of the Mega Man and Street Fighter series, and I am especially excited to see what’s next for Capcom’s big fighting game series after Street Fighter V released its final character. However, what perked my ears was the mention of Resident Evil.
According to Siliconera, Capcom mentioned providing “titles from the series in multiple ways in order to let more players enjoy the games.” It isn’t the most specific sentence so there’s a lot that could be unpacked from there. Siliconera takes this at face value to mean that some entries might be remastered to other platforms. Older titles that haven’t been ported to current-gen or even to PC in the case of Resident Evil – Code: Veronica spring to mind.
That could also mean properly releasing the likes of the remake versions of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 to Xbox Series X/S and PS5, or even bringing them over to the Nintendo Switch, likely as a cloud version as Resident Evil 7 Biohazard is. Speaking of, that cloud version was only in Japan so maybe Capcom will take that outside finally!
What I’m betting and hoping for is that this is concerning the rumored Resident Evil 4 remake. I prefer the remake of Resident Evil 2, and although I do believe the remake of Resident Evil 3 was lacking, I appreciate the effort and at the end of the day I still have the original so I don’t mind if it was a little iffy. Seeing how much influence and care that was put into Resident Evil Village, which incorporated a lot from Resident Evil 4, I would be very excited to see a remake of the game in their RE engine. The VR version looks neat, but I want something a little new!
Speaking of VR, I’m also hoping this might mean that the VR mode for Resident Evil 7 Biohazard isn’t a PSVR exclusive anymore. Everyone that’s played the game in VR says it’s amazing and ever since, everyone has been wondering when it will come to PC. A lot of people were thinking that maybe it was a weird exclusivity contract, but we recently found out that Hitman 3 on PC would be receiving an update that brought its previously PlayStation exclusive VR mode to the PC platform. My fingers are crossed we PC players get to play it in VR, or maybe hope VR is added to Resident Evil Village.
Capcom also mentioned that Resident Evil Village would be receiving DLC this year, but didn’t provide any more details. When the company first announced it last year, it seemed to sound like they had decided to make DLC after hearing how great the game was received. That should be fine but in this age of DLC and budgets being put aside for DLC ahead of time usually, it is surprising that there weren’t already plans for more content.
It’s hard to guess what kind of content might be coming. Resident Evil 7 Biohazard had a large variety of DLC from additional story content to brand-new modes. Everyone is assuming that Capcom will want to capitalize on the popularity of Lady Dimitrescu but with so little to go off of and the knowledge that this DLC is being added after development, I can’t even fathom if it will be a large DLC or something small. No matter what it is though, I’m greatly looking forward to it along with anything else that’s planned for the series as a whole. It’s a great time to be a Resident Evil fan.
