While the rest of us were focused on that Ken Doll and all his adverts for Facebook Gaming’s faux inclusivity, ID@Xbox apparently had a little showcase featuring the reveal of Sniper Elite 5. According to Eurogamer, it was even mentioned in a blink of a second reveal during the Game Awards, but unless it was revealed in the pre-show I even missed that one. Just a quick note on the Game Awards: I hope we never see them again and I hope Geoff Keighley stops his mountain of mess with them. His show is not prestigious, he cannot present very well, and I’d rather Plank from Ed, Edd, n Eddy presented because at least then we’d get some emotion.

Anyway, Sniper Elite 5 is officially a thing following that gap-year trip we all had in Italy decapitating Nazis with pinpoint precision, or more accurately, providing high-speed circumcisions. After a year away, with this one we’ll all be speaking la Français, eating some wonderful cheese, and continuing our escapade to do as many high-speed circumcisions as possible. 1944 France is the new setting, but as you’d expect, we’re still on the journey to be Gruff McGruffson killing every high-ranking Nazi official in the land.

Of course, the new reveal trailer didn’t say much. We’re on the way to find out what Operation Kraken is, we’ll continue to be one of those Michael Bay films if we’re crap at the game, and we’ve got some pretty French locations to swan about in. The press release sent out by Rebellion is a little more precise: “As part of a covert US Rangers operation to weaken the Atlantikwall fortifications along the coast of Brittany, Karl makes contact with the French Resistance.” Going on to say, “Soon they uncover a secret Nazi project that threatens to end the war before the Allies can even invade Europe: Operation Kraken. It’s Karl’s mission to take out the high[-]ranking Nazi officers and end Operation Kraken once and for all.”

Speaking about the gameplay changes, the press release continues with a piece about offering greater traversal options and opening up the sandbox a little more, allowing for greater opportunities to take out targets. Co-op will make a return and (according to the press release) will feature enhanced gameplay options, too.

Sniper Elite 5 will release in 2022, providing no delays push that back a little further, onto the PS4 and 5, Xbox One, and Series X/S, and onto PC with the game also releasing day-one on Xbox Game Pass. I think I speak for everyone when I play a little bit of “I Want it Now” from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
