Of all the childhood properties that I expected to become a video game, Marsupilami isn’t one of them. Considering the Marsupilami TV series never caught on in the US, and I mostly watched the short-lived 1993 series in reruns, it isn’t exactly a popular IP. However, Marsupilami Hoobadventure defied all of my expectations and brought what I would consider a cult classic cartoon to my Nintendo Switch.
In Marsupilami: Hoobadventure, you play as either Punch, Twister, or Hope, three marsupilami creatures who are living a peaceful life in Palombia. After accidentally opening an ancient sarcophagus, the three marsupilami must stop an ancient curse from harming all the animals. This quest will take you across several worlds and through all sorts of colorful environments.
As the marsupilami, you can roll, attack, jump, and do various platforming moves like wall jumps and slams. Marsupilami: Hoobadventure is marketed toward kids, so I wouldn’t expect anything super elaborate in terms of level design. However, there are some cool elements here, such as the ability to collect things like fruit, feathers, and other challenge tokens.
There are also Time Trial sections that you can complete after you finish up a level, which adds a layer of completionist collection to the game. Truthfully it isn’t that complex of an experience, but the platforming is solid. The levels are designed well, even if there are some reused assets here and there. If you liked the show as a kid, or you’re a fan of the comics, then I think this is a great game for you.
In fact, with this being the holiday season, it might be a great option to purchase for any gamer in your life that enjoys platformers. There’s also the option of picking it up as a kid-friendly alternative if you’re wanting something a little easier for younger kids in your life.
Overall, Marsupilami: Hoobadventure is a great experience for fans of the cartoon. It is a great platformer option for smaller kids and could be compared (to an easier degree) to platformers like Donkey Kong Country and other collect-a-thons of its kind. Kids and adults alike should be able to enjoy this and being able to take it on the go makes it even better.
