I guess you could call it a series dating back to 1987, with War in the South Pacific, however, Garry Grigsby’s War in the East didn’t release until 2010. Beyond that, War in the East 2 didn’t release until April of this year. Though it was released this year, it has been a prisoner (POW?) of the thing everyone seems to view as worse than Hitler, exclusivity. No, not to the beast from the east Epic Games, but instead publisher Slitherine’s own website.

A short time after the initial release, the very complicated war strategy game set on the Eastern Front is now releasing onto Steam. December 9th is the date you’ll want to keep in mind, and going by the screenshots, you’ll also want to keep in mind it is coming from a mind that has been making games longer than you’ve been alive (probably). Saying that it is dated without playing it might be unfair, but it certainly isn’t the most intuitive-looking game on the planet straight away. I’d go as far enough to say it is quite purposefully complicated in a niche way.

As Jonathan Bolding of PC Gamer notes, this will be the first time the “most advanced wargame modeling Eastern Front warfare in World War Two” will be interacting with the broader audience appeal of Steam. The quote there is taken from the description on the Steam page for Gary Grigsby’s War in the East 2. Personally, I am the type of boring idiot that would take a weekend to play something like this. I’d probably enjoy it despite not understanding a war. So roll on December 9th, please!
