After setbacks from Covid-19 and one of the most anticipated titles being lambasted for being released in a questionable state on some platforms, it’s no surprise to see so many developers having to announce delays. However, I was a bit surprised when I opened Twitter and saw that the release date for Marvel’s Midnight Suns had been delayed from March 2022 to a vague late 2022 timeframe.

First announced during the Gamescom Opening Night Live just a little over two months ago and after some leaked rumors, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a tactical RPG being developed by Firaxis Games, famously known for the Civilization series and the recent XCOM titles. This game is turn-based like the latter, but it also uses a card system in combat.

A gameplay reveal was shown a week later and a 20-minute gameplay showcase was streamed a week after that. While some, including myself, thought it looked a little rough, it didn’t seem too outrageously rough for a game that had another six months before release.

I’m always a proponent that if a delay seems necessary, it’s in the best interest to take it. My feelings are the same in this situation, but I do have to admit that I wasn’t expecting to hear a delay for this game, especially so soon after its announcement. The posted tweet mentions that the additional time “will be used to add more story, cinematic, and overall polish.” With a strong interest in the included characters and the overall story, my fingers are certainly crossed for that being the case.

The recent Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy by Eidos-Montréal has shown that people can be fans of material that takes more from the comics than the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that’s exactly what I’m hoping for with Marvel’s Midnight Suns. I enjoy Iron Man and Doctor Strange like everyone else but seeing Ghost Rider, Blade, and Wolverine coming together to fight Lilith in a story focusing on the darker side of Marvel is all new territory for a triple-A game. With the potential there is for this to be another unique Marvel game, I’m all for them taking all the time they need.

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
