We have not really covered it, but for months now there has been constant rumor of a remaster of two of the greatest Grand Theft Auto games, and the third in the series. These rumors have persisted for years, being nothing more theories by people looking for some kind of clout for something. However, more recently, there has been a little more evidence to suggest you’ll be returning to fictional Miami, Fictional California/Las Vegas or the crap one in New York. From being rated in Korea last week to achievements this week, it could very well be on the horizon as we speak.

The new “leak” if you will, is a list of achievements found by someone over on the GTAforums.com fansite. Little art pieces used to say, “Well done, you did that thing that’s really simple and you require a small amount of affirmation to continue.” Am I still annoyed at people hiding behind achievements as reasons to hold us up with accessibility? Yes, yes I am. Nonetheless, the images are stylized within each game’s odd look. They range from Vice City’s wonderfully colorful and cocaine-filled 80s to San Andreas’ grimy and grungy 90s. The less we say about the very early 2000s the better in my opinion.

Of course, these remasters are the reasons cited when several reverse engineering projects or heavily modded versions of the games are brought cease and desists. It turns out that has been happening quite a lot recently as Rockstar/TakeTwo send lawyers after very small groups or single people doing something for fun. Personally, I think that’s an odd choice when your fans are showing they love your games so much they want to keep them alive while you’ve been doing very little of that yourself. Nonetheless, last month Kotaku gave a few more details on the development, such as the fact that Rockstar Dundee (formerly Ruffian Games, console porter of Minecraft) was porting all three games to the Unreal Engine. Though more importantly it reported that they will be nothing more than heavily modded versions of the games.

This means that while all three would presumably be coming to PC, Switch, and both generations of PlayStation and Xbox consoles available right now, they’ll all be the same. As far as I’m understanding it, that is. So the question I have is, what’s the point? Yes, I am constantly banging on about how you shouldn’t be complaining about remasters now, and I’m not complaining about it. I’m asking why only do this amount of work for something so highly requested. People were going to buy it anyway, put in some actual work instead of porting GTA V again, this time to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
