With the recent news of Battlefield 2042 being delayed, it made me look back at the last modern Battlefield entry. To my surprise, Battlefield 4 still had a very healthy player count for its age.

Releasing back in 2013, Battlefield 4 is quite an old game to still be as popular as it is. Even more so when you compare it to the yearly Call of Duty release, which would have been Call of Duty: Ghosts. It seems crazy that the game is doing so well when the game that followed it, Battlefield Hardline, has almost no players.

Looking at the SteamCharts for Battlefield 4, the player count started to rise back in December of last year. It almost doubled in average players from the previous month and ever since then the amount of players has steadily grown. The game actually hit a peak player count of 12,284 back in August of this year.

The question is, why are so many people coming back to Battlefield 4? The most apparent reason is the announcement of Battlefield 2042. Players and fans of the franchise many want to experience a Battlefield with a more modern setting before the release of the new game. Technically Battlefield Hardline would be the most recent game in the franchise set in the modern era and it is still much less popular than its predecessor.

While this explains the influx of veteran players to the game, it still doesn’t fully explain the influx of new players. Of course, many of these new players could have previously played the game on a different platform in the past, moved onto PC, and picked the game up on sale, since it has been on sale recently. Regardless of where all these new players are coming from, Battlefield 4 is doing well. If you were ever interested in playing the game, now would be the time to check it out.

You can find the game on both Steam and Origin. It may be full-priced at the moment, but it goes on sale regularly on Steam for $5 and is included with Origin’s EA Play program.
