On September 19th, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences held the ceremony for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, honoring the best of this television cycle. Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer and held at the Event Deck at L.A. Live, this season’s Emmys saw multiple records broken and longtime industry veterans rewarded.
Despite its dominating presence in the industry, Netflix has finally won its first series award with The Crown in Best Drama Series and The Queen’s Gambit in Best Limited Series. The Crown was also the most awarded show of the evening, taking home 7 awards from 11 nominations, including every single Drama category. Netflix was also the most successful network of the evening, winning 10 awards from its 29 nominations.
Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso established a new record when it earned 20 nominations, making it the most nominated freshman comedy season of all-time. Ted Lasso won 4 awards on the evening, including Best Comedy Series and Best Actor in a Comedy for series creator and star Jason Sudekis.
HBO received the second most awards on the evening, winning 6 of its 28 nominations including three wins for Hacks in Best Comedy and Best Variety Talk Series for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
