One thing I wish I could just sit down and enjoy a little more is Red Hook Studios’ gothic-horror turn-based RPG, Darkest Dungeon. Much like Hades and countless other indie darlings I could name, Darkest Dungeon is something many people rave on about, but I hardly have the time to sit down and properly play. It is especially annoying when I also want to get into Warsaw, the WWII-themed game in the same vein by Pixelated Milk, but that is a story for another time.

A sequel to the highly acclaimed dungeon crawler Rogue-like/lite was announced in 2019, and to some people’s odd chagrin, it was also revealed to be an Epic Games Store exclusive for about a year. I still don’t understand that mentality whatsoever, but so be it. Just the other day it was further revealed that we’ll be seeing Darkest Dungeon 2 pretty soon on the Epic Games Store, October to be precise. The Lovecraftian horrors will go into an Early Access period on the 26th of October, with a few tweaks to the formula that many loved about the original.

It is said there will be new monsters, bosses, and challenges with a “significant tune-up” to combat mechanics and presentation while remaining turn-based. Changes to the metagame will be made on the whole, and the game will go from dark fantasy 2D to a stylized 3D art style. While retaining some of the points that made the first game popular, other points will be let go to give the game its own “creative and thematic identity.” Though Red Hook Games have been quite tight-lipped on the game since its announcement, some of you won’t have to wait too long before you can get your hands on it.
