Early Access is a great thing for developers and players alike. Developers get real-time feedback on what works, what doesn’t, what needs tweaking, what players like, and what they don’t. Players get a front-row seat to the progression of development at a lower price point (usually), and have the opportunity to give ideas and suggestions that might actually make it into the game.
That being said, I don’t normally go for Early Access games. I’m just too impatient to wait weeks for bugs to be fixed or features to be implemented. I’ll wishlist a game or back its Kickstarter, then wait for the full release before making the purchase.
Occasionally though, a game grabs my interest and I just can’t wait. PowerWash Simulator is one of those games. I love simulation games that are relaxing, fun, and let me do things I don’t have the knowledge, skill, or physical ability to do in real life. PowerWash Simulator is all of those and more.
PowerWash Simulator has 3 modes: Career, Free Play, Challenge, and Specials. In Career mode, you take on a variety of jobs, from cleaning a van and R.V. to cleaning a fire station. There’s no time limit, no right or wrong way to do the jobs, and no pressure.
In Challenge mode you can clean against the clock in a Time Challenge or test your accuracy by using as little water as possible in a Water Challenge. Finally, Free Play mode allows you to replay your favorite jobs from Career mode. Specials are unique jobs you can do, like cleaning the Mars rover. There’s only one Special right now but more will be added as development continues.
No matter which mode you choose, you’ll be cleaning up a variety of substances such as graffiti, grime, moss, mold, and plain old dirt. To do this you have a range of washers, nozzles, cleaners, and extensions, as well as a step stool (in some levels) at your disposal. Different substances have different levels of toughness.
PowerWash Simulator does a good job telling you what the surfaces you’re cleaning are made of so you can choose the right cleaner. This is important because the amount of cleaner you can purchase is limited. While I haven’t encountered anything I couldn’t clean with just water, some substances take a long time to clean up without cleaner.
You have 3 stances at your disposal, Standing, Crouching, and Kneeling. The stances are crucial, as some surfaces are very low to the ground, and to get the optimal angle/pressure, you need to get low. For example, you may need to clean the underside of a table or van, and crouching won’t get you low enough.
I played with a controller, and the controls are very smooth and intuitive. They even added a toggle (left on the D-pad) so you don’t have to hold down the trigger to make the power washer spray. Trust me when I tell you your hand will get very tired without that. The graphics are great and the sounds are realistic. There are multiple audio options so you can control the volume (or mute) of everything.
If you enjoy Simulation games like House Flipper or are just looking for something chill and relaxing, PowerWash Simulator is for you. FuturLab has done a great job so far, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for this game.
A PC preview copy of PowerWash Simulator was provided by FuturLab for this preview.
