Free-to-play PvP FPS, which correct me if I am mistaken, is a majority of the most popular games of the last few years. Don’t get me wrong, people can enjoy that if they want, but it does seem like a majority of games tend to be just that. With that in mind, you need something really special to stand out. Splitgate has been described as “Halo meets Portal;” I don’t know why you’d want to ruin a good thing with a bad thing, but here we are. Well, it seems that is what a large number of people explicitly wanted over the last few weeks.
Today was supposed to be the game’s release date, and it was, until yesterday. Following two weeks of increased player activity that caused servers to break and 1047 having to put out statements updating players on progress, the team decided to delay the game to better fix server issues with their new capital through investment. The studio has received, via a venture capital firm Human Capital, $10-million to increase the numbers of the development team and solve the critical issues of the game’s development. Only 30 staff members were initially working on the game with only 4 engineers, taking the game from its 400-odd players across several platforms to 75,000 with the game being downloaded by 2-million, according to Eurogamer.
While today was supposed to be that release date, the upsurge in player activity has caused the team to delay. Instead, the team is taking the new capital from Human Capital to further develop the game’s networking and solve the issues with servers that have been found throughout the two-week open beta. As for a new release date, there is no solid date set. Both Eurogamer and PC Gamer noting that it will release sometime in August.
In a statement made by 1047’s CEO and co-founded, Ian Proulx, said, “Our team has been blown away by the incredible reception the Splitgate community has shown us. With the steep and sudden increase in players trying to access servers, we’re having to sort out a myriad of technical issues that come with this level of insane growth.” Proulx goes on to say, “That’s why we’re excited for Human Capital to lead this latest funding round. In addition to providing [the] capital necessary to increase server capacity and stability, they’ help build the engineering team we need to create the best possible game for our players.” Hopefully, the team at 1047 can address the issues as soon as possible.
