The procedurally generated Road 96 captured my attention from the very first trailer. The idea of a narrative road-trip-esque game that gives you unique encounters and dozens of paths for the narrative really interested me. Now it seems that the French studio DigixArt has finally revealed a release date for Road 96.

Road 96 will release on Nintendo Switch, Steam, and Epic on August 16th, 2021. It will be priced at $19.99 USD. However, if you purchase the Hitchhiker’s bundle, containing the soundtrack and an original ebook containing stories from 10 years prior to the game’s events, you can purchase it for $29.91 USD.

In case you haven’t seen any information about Road 96 yet, here is a bit of info about it from the Steam Page.

Road 96 is a crazy, beautiful road trip. The discovery of exciting places, and unusual people on your own personal journey to freedom.

An ever-evolving story-driven adventure inspired by Tarantino, The Coen Brothers, and Bong Joon-ho. Made by the award-winning creators of Valiant Hearts and Memories Retold. Announced as part of the OMEN Presents initiative from HP Inc.

Moments of action, exploration, contemplative melancholy, human encounters, and wacky situations. Set against a backdrop of authoritarian rule and oppression.

A stunning visual style, a soundtrack filled with 90s hits, and a thousand routes through the game combine so each player can create their own unique stories on Road 96.”

I am very excited to give Road 96 a try. The idea of an open narrative where anything could happen, set against a backdrop of political turmoil just sounds amazing. Freedom positioned against survival, what could be more meaningful than that? We’re all trying to survive and it seems like, with Road 96, we’re taking that instinct on the road with us.
