Folks, you have no idea how much willpower it took for me not to change the word “content” to “kontent” in this article’s title. Anyway, it seems that NetherRealm Studios has now officially confirmed that the studio’s support for Mortal Kombat 11 in the form of new DLC has reached its logical conclusion. NetherRealm made this announcement via the official Mortal Kombat Twitter account, a development which was then picked up and reported upon by Game Informer.

[A]fter more than two years of supporting Mortal Kombat 11, DLC for the game, including new characters, has come to an end,” NetherRealm stated in the aforementioned tweet. The studio went on to add that they’re, “now focusing on [their] next project,” which has led to rampant speculation about just what that next project might be. Quite a few fans have posited the idea that it could be a Marvel fighting game similar to NetherRealm’s own DC Comics-based Injustice franchise or perhaps Injustice 3.

Personally, I’m hoping NetherRealm’s next venture ends up being either Injustice 3 or a possible remaster of a past MK title. The latter of these could at least theoretically be in the cards, as was teased in another tweet from Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon back in early June. I’m sure that the news of new MK11 content coming to an end has disappointed many of the franchise’s fans. For example, I was among those hoping that the colorful duo of cyborgs, Cyrax and Sektor, might be made playable considering their appearance in the game’s story mode. However, it seems this will not come to pass.

I was going to conclude this report by making a joke about NetherRealm having “finished” MK11 (if you catch my drift), but I’m unshakably certain that’s already been done by now. Now that NetherRealm has made it clear that the most recent Mortal Kombat title will not be receiving further downloadable content, perhaps the more ravenous portions of the game’s fan base will stop hounding Ed Boon on Twitter in the hopes that Kombat Pack 3 would be made and released. I certainly hope those fans realize that it’s high time to leave Mr. Boon be, but I won’t be surprised if things don’t turn out that way.
