Space… I’m sure some filled out the line with “the final frontier,” while others are swearing about it profusely. I love space, the big black expansive void that surrounds us and traps us on this dying rock that is constantly falling and spinning through it. I also hate space, the thing for love nor money, I can’t find more of it whatever I do. The latter being that of hard-drive space; Whether it is 1TB or hundreds of GBs, I can fill a hard drive like no one else. One game taking up some space on my PC right now is System Shock.

Over the weekend, or if you’re an American long weekend, Nightdive Studios released a teaser trailer for the upcoming remake of System Shock. By teaser, I mean they just showed off several minutes of the game. Playing through the Research level of the Citadel Station of the game, it looks to be as labyrinthine and horrific as always. From vents so tight, I’m sure a xenomorph would need to go on a diet to squeeze through, to fire-spitting scorpions, everything has a shiny 2021 lick of paint.

I’ll admit right now, this remake (from the footage) does seem to be taking a hefty amount of its design from modern releases, which is like cannibalizing its sequel in some respects. That is not a bad thing, as System Shock (1) was the first step a child makes before it becomes of age and has to pay a mortgage, or in short, grows up and becomes System Shock 2. Maybe it is the music disinterestedly humming away to itself, but the atmosphere is there if there was a little less echoey/reverbed plinking and plonking away on some blokes guitar.

The System Shock remake does look impressive, as it stands, I can’t take that away from it. Looking back at the original, it is a marked improvement, as the inventory took up half the bloody screen many moons ago. However, that atmosphere does seem to flow from every crevis the game has. It is an impressive turn of events given everything the studio has gone through, either recently or in getting the game (and its sequels) off the ground.

The game is set to be released in the “late summer.” However, those on PC can still check out the demo on Steam you can, and if you want to buy the game on GOG or the Epic Games Store, they are also available. Personally, I can’t wait.
