Everybody’s super Sonic racing! No one wanted to put in that best Sonic music next to all of Sonic 3 and the masterpiece that is Chemical Plant? Ok, you can sit in 4th place in the series of Sonic games then, where you belong, Minecraft.

It was a bit of a strange announcement yesterday as it was revealed as part of Sonic’s 30th anniversary. The little blue blur and all his friends (and Big the Cat) are now available as one of those expansion pack things to Minecraft. The annoying thing about it is just how good the levels and overall quality of this strange expansion happen to be. Featuring one reference-heavy world of slightly randomly generated versions of classic Sonic levels, such as Green Hills and Chemical Plant, and 24 character skins, it is one of the most Sonic things I’ve seen in a long time. Sadly it does feature Big The Cat.

Of course, being Minecraft it is a bit of a 3D blocky world, so you’d think it would be impossible to create Sonic levels you can play at speed. That is kind of true, but the rogue-like elements of losing all your rings on death and restarting the levels, the “jank” that still doesn’t parallel Cyberpunk 2077, and levels slightly changing every time set it apart. It has all the bits for a rogue-like and it is a decent 3D Sonic game. It’s not perfect, as you notice the elements used to make up the Green Hill Zone after only a few minutes. Also, it gets quite repetitive fairly quickly, with the other levels following suit too.

It may be a bit weird and a bit stupid, but it is just a lovely thing for fans of both Minecraft and Sonic to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the youngest 30-year-old ever. I mean, he doesn’t even have back problems, the lucky little hedgehog. If you’re a fan of Sonic, check out the Free Game on Epic article this Friday. You might be surprised by what you see.
